Dorros, Johnson have sparkling outings

Winter Travel Team 2024 - Week 6 Recap

Standings (click to view):

The headline matchup of Week 6 was clear. Undefeated Smashinators and the 4-1 Deuce Destroyers met atop the 12U Adv division to decide first place just past the season midpoint.

But injuries and illness stymied many of the week's key matchups. The Destroyers tried valiantly to avenge their only loss, in the season opener, to the same team. At press time Ethan Massey had defeated Shiloh Auzoux 6-2, 6-1 in the top singles position, but it wasn't quite enough for the overall tie to be decisive.

Another top-2 tilt sparked fervor, when the 3-1 Tornadoes challenged 4-0 Team Plex A for the championship spot at 10U Rookie. Gigi Rossi advanced on the basis of a default, which should now place the Tornadoes just ahead of Team Plex in the standings.

Set Point Strikers and Court Crushers took on different opposition with second place in the 18U Adv league on the line.

The Crushers kept pace with an incredible 7-6, 5-6 win from Robert Dorros, clinging to the second set as time ran out. Teammate Noah Kim won quickly to defeat the Aces 2-1.

Meanwhile the Strikers hung on to third place as Daphne Dunlap won at first singles. They still have a game in hand on the Crushers and could catch the first-place BTA squad.

Match Mavericks faced Grand Slam Gliders, with Court Commanders hoping for a Commanders win and to take care of business against QO Bears. Mavericks entered the weekend a game ahead of both other TC teams at 14U Adv.

Illnesses prevented full-strength competition in the first match, but for Court Commanders both Lila Briskin-Watson and Cornelia Touw went to stunning tiebreaks that decided the tie in favor of the QO Bears.

Two different matchups of Tennis Central teams filled the 18U Int slate this weekend. Topspin Titans Defeated the bandits by default, while The panther poachers and net ninjas also faced multiple injuries.

The Titans and Hitting Hulks both squared off with Team Plex, who had the weekend doubleheader. Titans kept their pennant race on track in a sweep, Rhett Dove closing out the first set 7-5, Everett Xue taking a tiebreak, and Brighid Shove-Brown outlasting two tough sets.

Hulks lost the previous day, but Yasmine Maalouf nabbed the second set to force a tiebreak.

At 10U Adv Austin Johnson had a sparkling outing, winning 6-3, 6-4 while his teammates fought in two close sets. His Green Gladiators dropped to 2-4 following their 2-1 loss to Lakewood but held onto third place.
